Is this company connected to a sanctioned party? Follow the path in cmpliance
A relationship map can point an officer toward an important connection without establishing its legal consequence. This cmpliance walkthrough shows why the type of each relationship, its supporting sources and the limits of the finding must travel together.

The company on the account is the starting point. A holding and a reported export relationship can lead an officer toward the same concern, but they require different evidence and different legal tests.

Follow the relationship, not just the line
An officer opens Quenmoor Capital LP in the workbench. The case concerns enhanced due diligence and a trigger review. At 0:03, the relationship path shows Quenmoor holding 22 percent of Ostrevo Medical d.o.o. Ostrevo then links to MinskTech Industrial OAO through a nominee relationship labelled "exports to". No ownership percentage is recorded for that second connection.
The first relationship describes a holding; the second describes a commercial connection. cmpliance shows the holding percentage and the export label separately. Drawing both on one path does not turn the export relationship into an ownership interest.
A useful review starts with that distinction. Which party owns shares? Which party is connected through a reported commercial relationship? What does the source actually establish? A graph makes the route easier to inspect, but it cannot remove those questions.
It would be wrong to multiply the 22 percent by an invented percentage for the next step. It would also be wrong to describe the entire path as proven indirect ownership merely because it reaches a sanctioned-party record. The path is a reason to investigate its relationships, not a substitute for doing so.
Open the evidence behind the connection
At 0:11, the officer opens two adverse-media source records behind the nominee link.
An officer needs to distinguish what a report says from the conclusion drawn from it. A report about exports may support an inquiry into a commercial connection. It does not, by itself, establish a shareholding, voting right or right to appoint directors.
That distinction guides the next evidence request. If the question is ownership, the reviewer needs evidence capable of establishing ownership. If the concern is a commercial relationship, the inquiry should address the parties, activity, dates and applicable restrictions. Asking for another ownership chart will not necessarily resolve a question about exports.
This is the practical extension of sanctions exposure through ownership and control chains: every material relationship needs a source, and the finding must remain within what that source supports.
A sanctions marker does not decide the whole case
The video next examines the sanctions hit and screening status at 0:20. The hit gives the officer a specific concern to examine. It does not establish that every company connected to that party is automatically subject to the same restrictions.
For example, OFAC's guidance on its 50 Percent Rule distinguishes ownership from control. Control alone does not automatically block an entity under that rule. Its indirect-ownership guidance describes qualifying ownership through entities that are themselves at least 50 percent owned in the aggregate by blocked persons. Those tests cannot be applied by treating every graph relationship as an ownership edge. Other sanctions questions require their own applicable rules and facts.
No marker is not a clearance
At 0:25, a parallel holding shows Quenmoor's 60 percent interest in Kestrova AG, with no marker in the displayed data.
The larger percentage does not make this the more concerning path simply because it is larger. Nor does the absence of a marker prove that the company has been comprehensively screened and cleared.
For a reviewer, the next question is what checks were actually performed, against which parties and sources, and when. A visible blank should not silently become an affirmative assurance. Keeping that boundary explicit avoids overstating either the concern on one path or the comfort on the other.
Referral preserves the question for the right reviewer
The officer takes the case and, at 0:52, refers it to the MLRO, the money laundering reporting officer, with the reason "Enhanced due diligence required" and a note explaining what the connection does and does not establish.
At 1:14, the saved result is awaiting MLRO review.
The note gives the next reviewer a defined concern, the source path to examine and the officer's reason for referring it.
Why it matters for your team
In cmpliance's agentic workforce, the agents' job is to prepare relationship findings with supporting sources. The officer's job is to decide what the path warrants. The workbench connects those tasks: inspect a holding, follow the next relationship, open its sources and refer a defined concern to the MLRO.
Can your reviewers follow a material relationship to its evidence and explain its limits before deciding what action it warrants? See how cmpliance works, then bring us an ownership or relationship question your team needs to investigate.
Agents do the work. Humans make the call.
An ownership holding and an export relationship cannot be treated as interchangeable steps in a sanctions calculation.
Source records help the officer test what a connection establishes; a marker or its absence is not a complete decision.
The officer's referral carries the relationship evidence and a reasoned note forward for MLRO review.
Frequently asked questions
→What kinds of relationship does the officer examine?
The path contains a 22 percent holding followed by a nominee export relationship with no ownership percentage. The officer examines the source records and keeps the distinction between ownership and a commercial connection explicit.
→Why examine the parallel holding?
It gives the officer another relationship to inspect alongside the flagged path. The 60 percent holding has no marker in the displayed data; its assessment still depends on the relevant checks and sources.
→What decision does the officer complete?
The officer refers the case for MLRO review with a reason and a note. The saved state is awaiting MLRO review.
